The Etiology of Epidemic Poliomyelitis

چکیده

Streptococci have been isolated from the central nervous system of monkeys dead of poliomyelitis. Streptococci have also been isolated from the central nervous system of monkeys dead of other causes as well as from the brains of normal rabbits. Streptococci isolated from poliomyelitic monkeys do not differ from those isolated from monkeys and rabbits dead from other causes. An etiological relation has not been established between streptococci and poliomyelitis. We have at several times isolated an organism that was similar to the globoid bodies culturally, morphologically, and in staining reaction, but have not been able to carry it along for more than three generations. The pathogenicity of these organisms has therefore not been tested on monkeys. We have not been able to produce typical lesions of poliomyelitis in rabbits by the injection of either the poliomyelitic virus or streptococci.

A Note on the Etiology of Epidemic Poliomyelitis

The globoid bodies, or minute microörganisms, cultivated from the central nervous organs of human beings and monkeys that have succumbed to poliomyelitis, may be detected in the incubated brain tissues of infected monkeys in forms indicating post-mortem multiplication. Incubating the poliomyelitic tissues in kidney-ascitic fluid culture medium and then crushing them is a more certain method for...

IN the summer and early autumn of 1957 there was an epidemic of type 1 poliomyelitis in Northern Ireland. The principle area involved was Belfast County Borough (population approximately 450,000), where there were 162 cases of acute poliomyelitis, of whic...

The clinical syndrome variously called benign myalgic encephalomyelitis, Iceland disease and epidemic neuromyasthenia.

Recent technical advances have added greatly to the ease with which virological methods may be applied to the study of poliomyelitis and allied infection of the central nervous system. These techniques have already borne abundant fruit in the development of a vaccine against poliomyelitis. The accurate appraisal of the preventive value of such a vaccine will depend on our ability to diagnose po...

Viruses of Poliomyelitis

Qualitative immunological differences exist between early passage strains or so called human strains of the virus of poliomyelitis. These differences show a relationship to the epidemic source of the virus and are exemplified in this study by 4 strains isolated in different years during an eastern and western epidemic of poliomyelitis.
